Renaissance Theaterworks Presents THE ROAD TO MECCA in April

Renaissance Theaterworks (RTW) wraps up its 20th season with THE ROAD TO MECCA by Athol Fugard. Suzan Fete will be directing one of Fugard's most lyrical plays, featuring Linda Stephens, Bri Sudia and Jonathan Gillard Daly. Running April 5 - 28, 2013, at the Studio Theatre, 158 N. Broadway. THE ROAD TO MECCA is based on the life and work of Helen Martins - South Africa's foremost Outsider Artist. For over 20 years, reclusive Miss Helen created her own "Mecca" - a fascinating backyard world of sculpture and mosaics in a desolate region of Apartheid South Africa. The village Pastor who embodies the community's conservative values is determined to move the elderly Miss Helen into an old age home. Miss Helen's dearest friend Elsa is just as determined that she remain free. MECCA is a tribute to the bravery of the Artist and the significance of artistic freedom in an oppressed society. The ROAD TO MECCA enjoyed an acclaimed Broadway revival in 2012, starring RoseMary Harris as Miss Helen.
The character of Miss Helen bears an uncanny resemblance to Milwaukee's own Outsider Artist Mary Nohl who created her personal "Mecca" of outdoor sculpture at her Beach Drive home in Fox Point.

Ticket Information: Tickets to THE ROAD TO MECCA are $28 for previews and $36 for regular performances (taxes and fees not included). Preview performances are April 5th at 8:00pm and April 6h at 4:00pm. Monday, April 15th 2013, will be the Pay-What-You-Can performance at 7:30 p.m. (Tickets for the April 15th performance will be available at the door at 6:30 p.m. No phone-in orders or advanced sales will be accepted for the Pay-What-You-Can performance.)
